Delorean Cars

Delorean cars were manufactured by the De Lorean Motor Company between the years of 1981-1983. Many people refer to the De Lorean DMC-12 simply as the De Lorean because it was the only model ever produced by the motor company. The car is famous for its winged doors, rear mounted engine and stainless steel body.

The first prorotype of the De Lorean DMC-12 appeared in 1977. Production officially began on the Delorean cars in 1981. Several modifications were made on the car during production, such as the wheels and interior. This car was produced in Northern Ireland, however the cars were made for left handed driving because the car was targed to American consumers. There were approximately 8,500 Delorean cars manufactured before the company closed down in 1983. There is believed to be around 6,000 Delorean cars today. Delorean cars are collectors’ items and looked upon as investments.

The famous brushed stainless steel bodies of the Delorean cars was designed by Giorgetoo Giugiarao. There are three Delorean cars which are plated in 24 karat gold. There are also Delorean cars which are painted. However, these cars were painted after they left the factory. It is important to note that there are a few hundred fiberglass bodied Delorean cars. These were never marketed and were only used to train employees. Anyone who had a Delorean car said that if the stainless steel body ever became scratched, it could easily be removed with scouring pads.

Delorean cars had a retail price of $25,000. There was a large waiting list of people who were willing to pay thousands of dollars above the retail price to get their hands on one of the famous Delorean cars. Today, these cars can be purchased by collecters in various price ranges that are based upon the car’s condition. Prices range from $15,000 to $40,000.

Delorean cars still have a large fan base today. There is a bi-annual Delorean Car Show which bounces from location to location. John De Lorean himself occasionally attended these car shows before he died in 2005. In addition to the bi-annual car shows, there are many other clubs which hold Delorean car events throughout the year. These include driving tours, tech sessions and road rally scavenger hunts. People who love and own Delorean cars also come together via the Internet.

Thre have been many famous people who can claim to own Delorean cars. Famous owners have included Johnny Carson, Chevy Chase, Patrick Swayze and James Bourne. Delorean cars have been mentioned or featured in many television shows and films. This famous car is also featured in video games.

There is no doubt that Delorean cars have their own fan base. It is not just among the 80’s generation, either. Children and teens around the world are intrigued by this car which looks like it came from the future.  Curiosity and love for Delorean cars has entered into the 21st century and there is no sign that it is slowing.
